Add transactions by hand
Record an expense, some income or a transfer in a few seconds — and know which fields are worth filling in.
Updated Jul 30, 2026
Typing transactions as they happen keeps your balances current and takes a few seconds each. It's also the honest version of budgeting: you notice the spend at the moment you record it.
For months of past history, importing a CSV is far faster. Use both — import the past, type the present.
Add a transaction
- Open Transactions and select Add Transaction.
- Choose Expense, Income or Transfer.
- Enter the Amount as a positive number.
- Type a Description — "Grocery shopping" is plenty.
- Pick the Account it happened on.
- Choose a Category and set the Date.
- Select Add Transaction.
You'll see the transaction at the top of the list, and the account's balance updated by that amount.
Tip: don't type a minus sign. The Expense / Income buttons decide the direction; the amount is always positive.
The optional fields
Everything below is optional, and each one earns its keep later:
- Merchant — who you paid. This is what merchant searches and spending-by-merchant answers match on.
- Notes — free text for anything you'll want to remember.
- Tags — cross-cutting labels like "holiday-2026" or "reimbursable". Start typing in the tag box to search your existing tags or create a new one.
- Link to Goal — appears on expenses when you have a goal funded by an account, so a planned purchase can be recorded against the goal it was saved for.
- Recurring Transaction — turn this on to link the transaction to a bill you already track, or to create a new recurring template from it (choose a frequency, and optionally mark it as a subscription or enable a payment reminder).
Note: you can set which type is pre-selected under Settings → Finance → Preferences → Default Transaction Type.
Record a transfer between accounts
A transfer is money moving between two of your own accounts. It is not income and not spending, so the category and tag fields disappear.
- Select Add Transaction, then choose Transfer.
- Enter the Amount that left the source account.
- Pick the From Account and the To Account — they must be different.
- Set the Date and select Add Transaction.
You'll see one transaction that reduces the source balance and increases the destination balance.
Warning: if the two accounts use different currencies, an Amount received field appears and must be filled in. Fyncora deliberately won't guess it from an exchange rate — your bank's fees and spread make a computed figure wrong, and here a wrong number would leave a balance that doesn't match reality. Enter the amount that actually landed.
FAQ
Are transfers counted as spending? No. Transfers never count towards budgets or spending reports — moving your own money isn't expenditure.
Can I edit or delete it afterwards? Yes. Select the transaction to open it, then use Edit or Delete. See Edit, categorize and tag transactions.
Is there a shorter form? While you're still setting up, the "Get set up" checklist on your dashboard offers a cut-down Add a transaction form with just account, amount, description, category and date.
